The AfroBeatles Manning Marable Tribute - Nowhere Man vs Fear Not For Man

The AfroBeatles tribute to Black Scholar and Activist Manning Marable.

Manning Marable, one of the leading scholars of African-American history in the United States, has died at age 60. He had been hospitalized with pneumonia last month, according to reports.

"He would want to be remembered for being both a scholar and an activist and as someone who saw the two as not being separated," Manning's widow, Leith Mullings Marable, told The Root.

For Newscast, Karen Grigsby Bates reports:

Marable, professor of history and African-American Studies at Columbia University, is known for his well-regarded books on the American Civil Rights movement, the meaning of race in America, and the tension between race and democracy.

Marable had suffered from the lung disease sarcoidosis for much of his adult life; he had a a double lung transplant last summer.

In 2003, Marable told a reporter for the Columbia Record how he thought about the civil rights movement:

Slaves couldn't free themselves by themselves, so it had to be a movement. It comes from a group of people deciding, 'We will sacrifice individual choice for the benefit of the group.' That's the logic of trade unions, the women's rights movement and the lesbian and gay movement.

In other words, emancipatory freedom is group freedom. Freedom is not found through multiple choices, but goals for all. Everyone should be able to eat, everyone should be able to vote and have decent schools.

Marable appeared on Democracy Now in 2007, to discuss his work on a biography of Malcolm X. That book, titled Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, is coming out Monday (4/12).

Here we are. Just another day in the life of The AfroBeatles, literally. Today we smash-up John Lennon and Paul McCartney's "A Day In The Life" with Fela Kuti's "Egbe Mio" which means Carry me, I want to die.

Strangely enough, while working on this. we stumbled upon this entire sub-culture that we had no idea existed. I told you from the beginning I knew very little about The Beatles before starting this project, but really, do all the fans out there know about this "Paul McCartney is dead" business???

B, I'm sayin that there is an entire set of people walking this planet who believe that Paul McCartney died in a car-accident in 1966 and that the dude we have been living with all these years is not at all Paul McCartney. The progenitors of this belief system weave an intense web of British Secret service involvement, assassination, and deception to maintain the cash cow that is the Beatles brand and, as exemplified in www.ispauldead.com, go to extreme lengths to document the extensive evidence supporting this theory. There is even a flick called Paul McCartney Really Is Dead which supposedly features recordings George Martin made on his deathbed admitting that Paul was indeed killed and that our Paul is this dude Billy Shears. The cover of SGT. PEPPERS is supposed to have some of the most blatant clues from John, George and Ringo that Paul is no longer with us, along with a backmastered run-out groove on the original vinyl that some interpret as the Beatles saying "Paul Is Dead, Paul Is Dead". The rabbit hole is DEEP on this one folks so decide if you want to take the blue pill or the red pill. Happy listening!

Valentine's Day The AfroBeatles Way... Can't Buy Me Love

The Beatles never picked up many Grammys on their comeup, but yesterday, they won for best historical album at the 2011 Grammy Awards, just as The Beatles / Cirque Du Soliel "LOVE" album makes its digital release debut exclusively on the iTunes Store. Seems like there is still ALOT of LOVE for The Beatles. But, when it comes to The Beatles and FELA, however, there is an interesting twist.

According to The Observer's Peter Culshaw:

Paul McCartney found himself in Lagos in August 1972. The plan had been to record a new record - the record that became Band on the Run - at somewhere other than Abbey Road and EMI had offered one of its studios in Rio de Janeiro or Peking. Instead, the former Beatle insisted on the Nigerian capital, picturing himself 'lying on the beach all day doing nothing and recording at night'.

As he drily noted later, 'it didn't turn out quite like that', what with being held up at knife point, the lepers in the streets, the omnipresent military, the corruption and the lack of security. Still, Lagos had its attractions. Chief among these was the chance to check out Fela Ransome-Kuti's band - 'the best band I've ever seen live ... When Fela and his band eventually began to play, after a long, crazy build-up, I just couldn't stop weeping with joy. It was a very moving experience.'

Thrilled by his experience, McCartney thought of recording with some of the musicians. When Fela caught wind of the plan he denounced McCartney from the stage of The Shrine and then arrived unannounced at the studio to berate him for 'stealing black man's music'.

As McCartney said at the time: 'We were gonna use African musicians, but when we were told we were about to pinch the music we thought, "Well, up to you, we'll do it ourselves." Fela thought we were stealing black African music, the Lagos sound. So I had to say, "Do us a favour, Fela, we do OK. We're all right as it is. We sell a couple of records here and there."

Wow... so, Paul McCartney of The Beatles LOVED FELA and FELA showed NO LOVE BACK!!!

When venturing down the path to do this mashup, I NEVER considered the possibility that Fela Kuti and The Beatles might have crossed paths. About a month ago @thisisjohnbook hit us with this tweet:

"If Fela Kuti did not threaten Paul McCartney in 1973 for suspicions of musical theft, it might have lead to@AfroBeatles afrobeatles.com"

I didn't know quite what that meant but it was my first clue that Fela and The Beatles had indeed mixed it up. After stumbling upon Culshaw's article from 2004, I got the full rundown which made working on this project even more precious. We are putting together greats that could have rocked together but didn't. This experiment shows what might have come from this collabo. But let's explore why Fela dissed Paul with the smashup of Can't Buy Me Love and Expensive Shit.

"Can't Buy Me".. meaning it's too expensive or priceless.

Thinking about the pairing from a race and colonialism perspective which constantly fueled Fela Kuti's music, i think specifically of the Diamond Industry and how the British, amongst other European nations, have pillaged and exploited the lands, resources and peoples of Africa so literally that the trade is often called Blood Diamonds due to the toll on human life to retrieve the precious stones from African mines and sell them in the World market. The Beatles and the "British Invasion" were so emblematic of the that White world power, Fela's response is essentially 'i don't care who you are, you can't buy my love.' The lyrics themselves say it most plainly. Happy Valentine's Day, The AfroBeatles way.

The afroBeatles concept came out of an IM conversation between myself and my good writer-firend, Kris Ex (50 Cent Book, Rolling Stone, XXL, The Source, Deus Machina Ex). Kris popped up one morning in the last week of 2010 and said, "I'd really love to hear Beatles melodies over Fela grooves". Despite my own many wranglings with remixes, reinterpretations, and mashups of Fela's works (Fela! The Musical Zombie Remix, Michael Jackson vs. Fela Kuti: The King Meets The President In Africa), I was surprised that I hadn't at least thought of the idea of a Beatles and Fela pairing.

But how could I not have? After all, the classic "with the beatles" cover had been "comped" early in hip-hop via Public Enemy / The Bomb Squad's release of Young Teenagers featuring my Marksmen brother, Kamron. And the MJFELA.com project had me considering the juxtaposition of genre Kings. In any case, I hadn't but, given Kris' point of inspiration, the cover concept for afroBeatles fell into place.

Journalist Selwyn Seyfu Hinds Examines The Mashup, part 2

Another great one passed on last year, though the word resistance was hardly bandied about in his obits. Michael Joseph Jackson was called a lot of things over the course of his career and in the wake of his death. Resistance fighter was not one of them. But as with all things Jackson, the equation is not as clear-cut as it first appears. For many folk, there are two Michael Jacksons—pre-and post-Thriller. And both incarnations fit into our narrative of struggle and success. Pre-Thriller Mike sits in the memory as unabashedly black, he of the full lips and nose, and Motown lineage. And while that Mike certainly wasn’t Marvin Gaye wondering what’s going on, much less lobbing the cries for justice of a Marley or a Kuti, his artistic heights in a society inimical to the very notion of black excellence, and his success in crafting a musical common-denominator in factionalized America can’t be said to have had no place in the struggle. Post-Thriller Mike, he of the thinner features, lighter skin, and tabloid attention, sits more uneasily in the memory. For this Mike, energy for resistance/struggle was often directed in the global/humanist realm, with a particular emphasis on children. He damn near created the mode of concerned international celebrity now exhibited by the Bonos, Jolies, and Madonnas of the world. But Mike certainly had his black-fist-in- the-sky moment, too.

Recall 2002: Jackson banded with Al Sharpton to lobby against exploitative practices of the music industry and the way it impacted black artists. Yes, it may have been personally motivated by his own frustrations with his label Sony. Yes, the cynical would say it was easy for him to rage against the machine then, when he’d stopped selling records and had already been caricatured by the strange behavior and scandal that ruled his later years. But there was something in the face, eyes, and voice of a Mike Jackson, standing outside of Virgin Music, shaking his proverbial and literal fist at the one he’d named tormentor that Fela Kuti would understand. Besides, anyone who helped masterminded “We Are The World,”—that celebrity anthem which raised $63M to combat famine in Africa—has earned the right to petition for a perpetual seat at the table for heroes of the struggle—at least the artistic ones.

EBONY/JET: Do you have any special feeling about this return to the continent of Africa?

JACKSON: For me, its like the "dawn of civilization." Its the first place where society existed. It's seen a lot of love. I guess there's that connection because it is the root of all rhythm. Everything. Its home.

EBONY/JET: You visited Africa in 1974. Can you compare and contrast the two visits?

JACKSON: I'm more aware of things this time: the people and how they live and their government. But for me, I'm more aware of the rhythms and the music and the people. Thats what I'm really noticing more than any thing. The rhythms are incredible. You can tell especially the way the children move. Even the little babies, when they hear the drums, they start to move. The rhythm, the way it affects their soul and they start to move. The same thing that Blacks have in America...

Journalist Selwyn Seyfu Hinds Examines The Mashup, part 1

The entire city of Lagos, Nigeria breathes like one giant organism. Inhale. Frenzied motion does not so much cease as pull back. Like the innumerable vehicular antibodies that speed along Lagos's asphalt arteries, only to slam to unpredictable halts driven by nary a stop sign or traffic light. Exhale. Hucksters of all types—young, old, armless, legless—swarm the stuck vehicles, creating an instant market. Goods are swiftly offered: phone cards, sexual favors, foodstuff. The bargaining comes fast, at least until the city draws its next breath; sucking hucksters away, then propelling vehicles off along its arteries again. Inhale. Exhale. Stop. Go—at hyperventilating pace. Such is the exhausting, inexorable rhythm of this living city. Save, perhaps, for one place in an area called Ikeja. Here, the sun blinks through Lagos’s near-permanent grey sky to gaze upon a sand-colored building with a portentous name—The New Afrika Shrine. It is not the same Shrine made famous by afrobeat king Fela Ransmoe Kuti. That place is long gone, destroyed in 1977 by the soldiers of Fela’s nemesis, the Nigerian government, the longtime target of his musical broadsides against the forces of oppression and structural iniquities. This new Shrine is its spiritual and musical inheritor. Within these walls, one finds respite from the frenzied stop/go pace of the city. On any given night, especially when Fela’s son Femi Kuti is home from tour, the new Shrine comes alive with the sounds of afrobeat, and Lagos's hectic stop/go drowns in a steady pool of rhythm, melody, and spirit. All around the building, images of Great Ones look down with still approval—in stark contrast to the living, dynamic bodies in motion. On one wall sits Fela himself, of course. Nearby one finds MLK, Malcolm X and sundry others. All of them great. All passed on. All champions of resistance. All powerful advocates for the human and political rights of African and African-descended peoples.

I saw this joint lurking on Amazon and cannot wait to get it. We've done all of the mixes on this album byhook or crook, at the moment of inspiration (which is sometimes live at a party). “We Are the World” was one of the original mash-ups—a single musical tapestry that blended diverse talents, races, and styles. Twenty-five years later, we live in the age of the mash-up. From technology to music, our contemporary landscape is defined by this notion of the mash-up—the combination of two or more sources to create a new thing. But the 21st century mash-up meme extends far beyond technology and music. It undergirds our entire global existence. Look around the world: The transparent, translational, trans-national, and technological nature of modern times and the way has erased old lines, pushing narratives, peoples and ideas up against each other—whether in harmony or dissonance. Look at the President of the United States, himself a living embodiment of the 21st century mash-up, be it through his own genealogy, his bundled identity of basketball player meets law professor meets Hawaian dude meets devoted family man, the persistent American social narrative about black people that his ascension upended, or the hysterical reaction that ascension has engendered in some corners of the country. Today, the old, new, and newer thrust into one another’s faces at hypervelocity. Name the arena—local politics, regional conflicts, Wall Street versus Main, Al Qaeda versus the West, Google versus Microsoft, the music business versus its consumers—and the conclusion is clear: In our world, things come together with great breadth and immediacy, more than ever before. Sometimes the mating is successful. But as another son of Nigeria once wrote: sometimes things fall apart.

That, however, is not the case here, on this album—The King Meets the President in Africa— where Fela Ransome Kuti and Michael Joseph Jackson mash in thematic, musical and spiritual unity in ten vibrant instances, with results that deliver pure mind/body juju. At first glance that conclusion rings counterintuitive, if only because the very idea of wrenching the distinct compositions of these two masters into a singular, workable groove seems improbable —if not outright impossible. Michael is, well, Michael. And as anyone who’s ever mixed or danced to a Fela record can attest, his songs are highly organic, ever evolving, ever changing records, the complete antitheses of modern beat-machine music—not exactly prime candidates for blending. Yet, blend they do. The outcome? Mental and dance-floor dynamite. Consider Remember The Time (Roforofo Remix), which introduces Jackson’s “Remember The Time” to Fela’s “Roforofo Fight.” Jackson’s tune is an urgent reminisce to an old lover, delivered with his usual searing vocal performance atop an infectious dance groove. But with the instrumental percussive thunder of “Roforofo Fight” as a platform, it achieves an earthy afrobeat identity, particularly with the pitch-perfect use of the “Roforofo…” horn refrains over Teddy Riley’s original production. That alone suffices. But if one knows the context of Fela’s “Roforofo Fight,” a metaphor for a mud-slinging fight that leaves both participants sullied from skin to soul, then the layers deepen. In this context Jackson’s lyrics play as one side of a lover’s lament. A communiqué of regret now that cold distance has supplanted warmth and intimacy. A plea for the peace of what was. In fact, it’s easy to hear it as a heartfelt appeal from a long-suffering Nigerian people to the foreboding and abusive partner in that relationship—their own government.

It is rare that an artist erupts onto the musical landscape, defines a genre, shakes the world its core and departs too soon leaving a legacy that can fill the night sky. Jazz had John Coltrane. Rock had Jimi Hendrix. Afrobeat had Fela Kuti and on THURSDAY, OCTOBER 15th Jump N Funk, Libation, FELA! The Musical, The Museum for African Art & S.O.B.'s pay homage to the life of Nigeria’s warrior poet and the Godfather of Global Soul with FELABRATION!

FELABRATION takes its audience through an interactive journey of the life of Africa’s most prolific musical pioneer with a documentary, Music is the Weapon, live drummers, special performance by dance virtuosos Afro Mosaic Soul and leading the evening’s tribute are DJ Rich Medina, the global ambassador of Jump N Funk and DJ Ian Friday, minister of sound for Libation, ground zero for the Soul Revolution.

Fela Kuti was born October 15, 1938 in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos and received his early education in his homeland. In 1958 Fela's parents sent him to London to go to school for medicine, but he opted to register at Trinity College's School of Music where he studied composition and chose the trumpet as his instrument. Fela became influenced by legendary artists such as Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra and formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961. They soon became a fixture in London’s club scene. Two years later, he created “Afrobeat”, which was inspired by James Brown, the Yoruba culture, high life and jazz. Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos to Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine.

Playing constantly and recording at a ferocious pace, Fela and his band now called Africa 70 became huge stars in West Africa and beyond. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government and made Fela not only a pop star but a political figure as well. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions. As with any musical icon, his work crossed over musical genres and influenced a multitude of artists. Fela died on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS. One million people attended his funeral in Nigeria. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available through public demand all over the world.

Amazing week last week man…La Melodia ( Amsterdam) cold rocked the spot at Santos 2 Fridays ago, fresh outta customs after a 7 hour flight! Bananas… Li’l Ricky’s at APT the following Wednesday was bangin’! Then Bobbito and I met at Newark Airport to catch a 7am flight to Portland to rock at The Fix. Happy Feet Tour of the west coast was incredible…. Special shouts to Lady Connie, Omega Whatts, Rev Shines, and DJ Kez in Portland. San Francisco came out in full force to 330 Ritch the following night, thanks to the efforts of Hakobo, Marky, Refresco and Massive Selector. LA was also in rare form Saturday at Jimmy’s Lounge, and we gotta thank FroLab and Footlong Development for really wrecking the promotions for us out there. Much love and respect to our entire west coast family! We ended the trip with Sunday night’s introductory Happy Feet Party at Le Pouisson Rouge in NYC, and it was truly beautiful. Thank you Mark Hines, for introducing us to the LPR, and here’s to the birth of a great relationship! We sold MAD CD copies of The Connection LP both on the west coast, and in NYC this past Sunday night, so thanks to everyone who made a purchase! Keep on doin’ what you’re doin’. Real music lives on!

One night of afrobeat, one night of big room happiness, and closing on Saturday with a great one off night in Brooklyn’s finest new venue, Deity! This past weekend in California was beautiful. First, Spinna and I played at “Nothing But Love” at Mighty in San Fransisco on Saturday night. Happy birthday Hakobo! The party was off the meat rack to say the least! Thanks for having us bro.

Sunday night, I had the pleasure of spinning alongside my man Spinna once again, this time in the lounge room of The Vanguard for the “Deep” 10 Year Anniversary party with Marques Wyatt. Garth Trinidad kicked off the night in our room lovely, followed by me and Spinna. In the main room, it was Marques Wyatt, Louie Vega and Tony Humphries….bananas….Prince chilled upstairs in the lounge with Spinna and I all night! He was dancing and playing air guitar on his cane the entire time….incredible….Rashida, thanks for bringing him by! Marques and Zanne, thank you for allowing me to be part of such a huge event, and here’s to Miami!

We love you, we miss you, and we will all cherish our memories with you Lolo! I’m so happy you got to meet your great grandson before you left us for higher ground. The Meat Packing District is under siege by The City of Ne York and its developer friends at the moment, but I've been assured by APT's owner Alex Petrossian that this too shall pass. --Fela Kuti Birthday Celebration w/ Special Guests Zozo Afrobeat Band--On Thursday, October 16th, Rich Medina, the DJ/Producer and mastermind behind successful reccurent parties Little Ricky's Rib Shack (Wednesdays at APT) and AfroDisco (SOB's, Winter Music Conference 2007), returns to SOB's to revive one of the most legendary and beloved dance functions of the decade,Jump N' Funk. As America's very first and most consistent DJ/Club event dedicated to the timeless music and social contributions of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Jump N' Funk became a staple of New York nightlife from 2001-2007, but eventually disbanded when Rich Medina's partners went on to pursue other endevors, one of which was "The Fela Project", an art exhibit at the New Museum of Contemporary Art in New York.

More than a year after dissolution of Jump N' Funk, Rich Medina, one of the main progenitors of Afro House and global dance, returns to SOB's to bring the party back to life. Part of a 3-part mini-tour hitting Philadelphia, New York and DC, Jump N' Funk's New York rebirth takes place on Thursday October 16th, fittingly the day after the birthday of the party's inspiration, Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Joining Rich Medina in the celebration is the Zozo Afrobeat Band, a group that honors Fela's legacy and truly keeps the Afrobeat fires burning. A 13-piece ensemble from New York City, Zozo Afrobeat features musicians from around the world and is led by African music luminary Kaleta. Born in the Republic of Benin and raised in Nigeria, Kaleta grew up recording and performing with legendary Nigerian musicians Fela Kuti, Femi Kuti and King Sunny Ade, Shina Peters.Thursday, October 16th marks Jump N' Funk's triumphant return to NYC as Rich Medina mans the turntables and the Zozo Afrobeat Band takes the stage in celebration of the legendary Fela Kuti's birthday. Back in August of 2001, I started “Jump N Funk”, aka “JNF”, with then partners Debbie Sealy, and Trevor Schoonmaker. From it’s humble beginnings as a 4 hour after work party at Shine (now called Canal Room), the event soon became a full blown club night and grew to be known as America’s very first and most consistent DJ/Club event dedicated to the music and social contributions of the legendary Fela Anikulapo Kuti. After a year, Trevor moved on to a fruitful curatorial career, pursuing his museum dreams with “The Fela Project”, and amiably leaving Debbie and I to run the “JNF” party on our own. We then connected with Peggy Jean Louis, who served as a partner from the time of Trevor’s departure until her own departure to the UK to pursue her personal career with NYLO and other interests in 2006, where she continues to see consistent success today.

From 2002 until 2006, “JNF” rocked The Winter Music Conference in Miami annually to rave reviews (Google it!), and made stops at The Coral Room, Martinez Gallery, and Cielo, before eventually ending up at SOB’s in 2004. The relationship with SOB’s is still alive and well today, but unfortunately in 2006, Debbie and I parted ways as partners, due to personal and creative differences. At that point, out of respect for the “JNF” brand’s history, and the need to regroup, I stopped using the JNF name. I took a few months off after The Winter Music Conference in 2006, and renamed “JNF” to “Afro Disco.” In my mind ths was the most diplomatic way I could continue the JNF tradition at the time…, new energy, new perspective, new name, and new visual presentation. “Afro Disco” in turn has been an incredible success as well, with The Winter Music Conference in March 2007, and successful events at SOB’s (NYC), Fluid (Philly), Atlanta, Chicago, Washington DC, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Boston.

Despite the success of “Afro Disco”, I’ve been asked on an almost daily basis “What happened to JNF?” “When you gonna do another JNF?” “Is Afro Disco like JNF?”. Funny but true…So, after a great deal of thinking, I have made a decision to bring back the “Jump N Funk” name, live and direct, on my own. You wouldn’t believe the number of requests I’ve had to help me reintroduce the party, or people offering to host the party for me, promote it, play there with their band, and so on and so forth. It has been truly unbelievable, and the energy I’ve felt from those moments has led me to reopen the event anew, sans partnership.

With that, I’m proud to announce the grand reopening of “JUMP N FUNK” in October of 2008 in NYC, Philly, and Washington DC, in a trio of Fela Anikulapo Kuti birthday celebrations! We will begin with JNF at Fluid in Philly on October 10th, 2008, followed by JNF at SOB’s in NYC on October 16th with special guests Zozo Afrobeat Band, followed by JNF in Washington DC with Kat ( Li’l SoSo Productions) on October 18th ( stay tuned for venue details). The “Jump N Funk” myspace page will be reopened with new information and photos as of Monday September 22nd, 2008. We are also already in talks with 5 other US cities about hosting the party as well. Things are looking really good, and we are expecting some incredible moments to come about from this rejuvenation. I write this press release today as a message to our fans who have prodded me into starting this party again, and to say thank you for your undying love and support for what we started with “JNF” back in 2001. I also write this press release sending love and peace to my former partners, and wishing them the world in their new endeavors, far and wide. We started a beautiful thing together, and I want you to know that I plan to continue carrying the torch, despite our not working together at “JNF” any longer. Fela still smiles down from heaven upon us. With that, I hope this finds everyone in good spirits and health, and here’s to a new start for “Jump N Funk”! Imagine this: you are intelligent, and you are gorgeous. Not too hard, is it? Now imagine you have a cause worth fighting for. This is a little more difficult, no? Now imagine you have a place to go where there are other, intelligent, beautiful people talking about the same concerns and fighting for the same rights; and not just talking but dancing and grooving to powerful music that speaks to the soul and the fighting spirit of mankind. <br /> This may be impossible to imagine unless you have partaken in one of the most socially-aware parties this side of a Central Park Anti-War protest. The place: The JUMP N FUNK Party. The reason: To celebrate the work of FELA ANIKULAPO KUTI, the pioneer of Afro-Funk and the solitary voice of the Nigerian people during the post-colonial rule of Nigeria in the early Seventies and Eighties.

JUMP N FUNK party brings the people in, with enticing sexy sounds of FELA. A crucible that threatens to boil over with every FELA favorite the DJ spins. This rebellious energy is the engine of resistance against the oppressive regimes anywhere in the world. As FELA KUTI has said, "Music is a weapon" and the people who participate in the collective outpouring of dance and conversation at the JUMP N FUNK become the most potent political ammunition: educated people.

Music and dance don't change policy, but they give people the joy and strength they need if they are to keep their struggles going in the face of repression, inertia, and despair.

FELA knew all this, and so does everybody who bounces to his genius all night. FELA's spirit lives on through his music and the best way to experience his music is with the floorboards thumping with the heavy stomps of a liberated people. The bass fills a room and shakes any curious investigators as soon as they walk in . It is hard to ignore the inviting non-intimidating vibe of the staff and guests.

Soon everyone is moving in a sea of sexy inhibition and an orgy is taking place all around you. Hands will grab your waist and full bottom will be thrust into your body like a drunken lover. The wrong idea is very rarely received nor given because this is the experience that FELA intended us to have; a feeling of safety and sexy, an impression of right and rebellion and an embracing of Africa and America.
